ABOUT this workshop
Halfway through the decade in which we were meant to solve the climate crisis, we sorely lack an economic and financial system that is able to meet the scale of the challenge. Emissions are still rising, the costs of climate-related impacts are increasing, while public and private investments in mitigating and adapting to a warming world are falling short. Despite a booming renewables sector, fossil fuel consumption is still growing, spurred by shifting political priorities and energy-hungry AI.
Against this backdrop, financial insecurity is on the rise. Inequities in the international monetary system are pushing countries in the Global South deeper into debt crises—making climate adaptation even harder in regions that have done least to cause the crisis. Here in Europe, inequality, especially across generations, is widening as housing becomes increasingly unaffordable and jobs more precarious. The trend, especially among younger people, to seek alternative—but often riskier and energy-intensive—assets, like cryptocurrency, sharpens economic and ecological uncertainty.
To meet these challenges, we must address the structures that are driving a degenerative financial system–undermining the systems that sustain life—and explore ways to shift to a regenerative system—where finance is directed in support of all life, now and in the future.
